Data Feeds For PSMA licence holders
Getmapping can serve your OS Mastermap® Topography Layer, Vectormap district and OS Vectormap® Local via WFS and/or your entire Ordnance Survey mapping database via WMS, including OS Opendata. Both services are OGC compliant and fully maintained on the Ordnance Survey update cycles
Why Use Getmapping
Getmapping has been serving data feeds to large corporate and Government bodies for a decade now, and pioneered the delivery of aerial imagery over the internet. Our data feeds are very well established and operate from protected datacenters with 99.99% uptime, providing a robust and proven service.
Web Map Service and Web Feature Services
About WMS
Getmapping provides a WMS service to stream Ordnance Survey Maps over the Internet. WMS is increasingly popular because it reduces local network and storage overheads and the need to manage and update large constantly changing datasets.
WMS is a standard protocol for streaming georeferenced mapping over the Internet to web-based applications, GIS and CAD software. WMS feeds only load raster data that a user actually needs to see rather than a whole dataset, which often
results in lengthy load times or delays when panning and zooming. Mapping datasets can put a heavy strain on a network, especially when it is being accessed by many users at the same time.
WMS feeds are available for Ordnance Survey Mapping, including both PSMA and OpenData. All the available scales can be layered into one WMS feed. This means that the feed detects the level of zoom and displays the most appropriate scale of mapping only delivering the data required, which decreases load time. For example, with Ordnance Survey mapping when fully zoomed in the WMS will display OS MasterMap®, and then when zooming out say from a building to a neighbourhood it will display OS Street View®.
About WFS
Getmapping has a fast WFS service to stream Ordnance Survey MasterMap®, over the Internet. A WFS feed of OS MasterMap® will reduce network overhead and the need to manage and update this very large, complex and constantly changing dataset.
WFS is a standard protocol from the Open Geospatial Consortium for streaming georeferenced vector mapping data over the Internet to web based applications, GIS and CAD software. A WFS map feed enables users to interrogate, update and create map features whereas WMS feeds used by online mapping portals such as Google Maps only display an image, which users cannot edit or get feature information from. WFS is very useful for gaining access to the features and intelligence built into highly detailed vector mapping such as OS MasterMap.
The Getmapping WFS service is priced progressively and aimed at organisations which are already heavy users of OS MasterMap, such as Government departments, Local Authorities and Utilities. WFS feeds offer several distinct advantages over traditional methods of delivery i.e. compressed media files. Users can be sure that they are always referencing the latest data, there is no longer a need to receive updates and load them on to local servers. This also means that there is less network overhead and less time actively managing the data, which can deliver significant savings.
Advantages of using the Getmapping WMS and WFS
Only load the imagery you can see. WMS feeds only load the imagery that a user actually needs to see rather than a whole dataset, which often results in lengthy load times or delays when panning and zooming. WMS feeds work differently to offline datasets such as TIFs for displaying aerial photography. Traditionally the entire dataset is loaded into a GIS package which can result in lengthy loading times, especially when viewing a large area, e.g. a district or county in one view. In some cases it can even result in a crash where the software cannot cope with the large dataset.
WMS/ WFS feeds solve this problem. When a user pans or zooms in a GIS, only the mapping required for that viewing window is loaded. This means no matter what the size of the dataset, whether it is 1GB or 1000GB, the loading time is only limited to the size of the map window and the speed of the Internet connection, saving numerous man-hours of waiting.
Less strain on IT infrastructure. Ordnance Survey mapping datasets can put a strain on an organisations network when it is used by multiple users simultaneously. This constant access to data can clog up local networks and reduce network and PC performance. Having an efficient external source of mapping through WMS/WFS frees up the internal network and costs associated with the storage of data.
Always have the latest mapping. The limitation with carrying copies of aerial photography on a PC or local network is that they can quickly become outdated when new versions are available. Traditionally a user would have to download another copy from their internal network if/when they are told of an update. With a Getmapping PSMA WMS or WFS feed, the most up-to-date mapping will always be loaded by your GIS. Getmapping manage the updates and versions so you never have to worry if you have the latest mapping.
Stop switching on and off layers. In our WMS feeds for Ordnance Survey mapping all the available scales of mapping are layered into one WMS feed. This means that the feed automatically detects your AOI and displays the most appropriate scale of mapping and your computer never loads more data than you can see. This reduces the amount of time spent loading up and switching between layers when navigating a map. For example, when zoomed in over a building the WMS will display OS MasterMap, and then when zooming out to view a neighbourhood it will display 1:10,000 Scale Raster. The feed options are configurable.
Control how the mapping is used. As imagery is used by many different departments, it can be difficult to control who has access to relevant data. Getmapping can provide additional WMS feeds that can be distributed to contractors that have limited geographic extents and usage limits (if necessary). This avoids delays in giving contractors access to the relevant datasets, and also has an added security advantage as there is less need to give external contractors access to the corporate network.
Feeds of user owned data. Other datasets held by PSMA clients can also be added to the feed service such as aerial photography.
